Enamel "VAN NELLE'S TABAK"
Quality:
Good - visible, slight wear, commensurate with age
A vintage enamel sign by Van Nelle Tobacco, The Netherlands, 20th century. The company “Van Nelle” was founded in 1782 by Johannes and Hendrica van Nelle as a shop selling coffee, tea, and tobacco at the Leuvehaven in Rotterdam. After their passing, their son continued the business and sold a share to the Van der Leeuw family, who acquired full ownership in 1845. Over the course of the 19th century, Van Nelle expanded into a factory with its own plantations in the Dutch East Indies. In 1923, construction began on the iconic Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam, a prime example of functionalism and modernism, which was completed in 1931. A highly decorative piece!
